Dress like Betty Draper but have Don Draper Cook the Turkey

We may want to dress like the Mad Men female cast on Thanksgiving , but do not dish up the turkey like Betty Draper with poor daughter Sally doing all the serving.

Show your own children fair-play genderwise and don’t choose a boy over a girl. By the way you treat boys and girls, you will teach them that they are equal. You say that this is a no brainier now- but the Equal Rights Amendment has yet to pass.
Gender can be a paralyzing family rule. Families many times favor a male child over a female. In all cultures, gender dictates blindly. Parents of all societies often give more to a boy than a girl.
This ossified gender-based rule can be seen in AMC’s brilliant Mad Men female cast reflecting 1950’s women’s roles. Silent Generation ladies had to be to be secretaries when characters like voluptuous and brainy Joan really ran the office or brilliant copywriter Peggy remained a lonely single woman brutally bossed around by the imperious and ever stylish , Don Draper.
The Women’s Movement was meant to resolve this dilemma. Glass ceilings were supposed to be shattered after the smoke hazed Sterling, Draper, Cooper, Pryce closed its doors .
But women continue to struggle with this issue in spite of all the MBA’s PhD’s walking through the shards in the past 50 years. Hilary Clinton ran for president .Three women sit as judges on the Supreme Court. Mad Men’s Peggy Olsen’s turned into Tina Brown and now heads up Newsweek and the Daily Beast.
Yet still, being a woman – both winsome and powerful- all at the same time remains a complicated issue . The title of AMC’s hit series “Mad Men,” says it all- and in 2010- are men still mad and parents still reinforcing this gender steriotype.
Model gender equality at Thanksgiving and
Help out gender equality on Turkey Day . Ask men to cook something, give thanks for daughters and sons then Have the boys clear the table too . After all they are still the premiere chefs.
